Defective vacuum chuck?? :D

I wanted to turn the tenon off my most recent bowl but I couldn't get the vacuum chuck to hold it no how, no way. I finally had to break down and use my old donut chuck to finish the bottom.... :D :D :D

Not having used my vacuum chuck, I'm no one to give advice, but... As I understand it the vacuum won't work if you've got holes in the bowl. I hope more experienced turners either corroborate this or give another explanation.

That's very nice. I particularly liked the scalloped rim. How'd you pull that off?

That is a beauty Bob. How did you scallop the top? Well done.

The scallops on the rim are formed by the intersection of the slope of the bowl side with the 12 sided perimeter of the ring I glued up for the top rim. In this "in progress" picture if you look up near the top you can see the lower curve of the scallops developing as I was roughing out the bowl exterior.

Turning the curve of the inside of the rim parallel to the outside curve keeps the rim thickness consistent and forms the top curve of the scallops.

For someone who likes to kid, I can be incredibly dense. Never noticed your laugh icons. When it comes to turning, I am pretty much of a slow witted moron. Nice work!!!
What I can't understand is why some of the other posts didn't ridicule me for being so dumb. In the academic world, people would have been tripping over themselves in a hurry to make fun of such a gaff.

That is a slick bowl... that "almost" makes me want to try some segmented stuff (I'm too lazy... that's a LOT of work)

As far as the vacuum chuck holding... I've read some stuff on here about coffee grounds and epoxy... I think if you mixed up enough and filled in all those voids... It might hold ;)

Robert, this one was pretty close as far as centering goes, but if it is off a bit what happens is that some of the "corners" do not fall exactly on the glue joint between the rim segments. When that happens it is easy to take a few passes with a sharp block plane on the straight rim edge to move the corner back to the glue joint.

you need an air tite seal, try some rubbermaide shelving material maybe. the solid, no holes in it 12"x appx 4ft. 1/16 in thick stuff. The white foamy stuff that come with paking works pretty good too. :):)
