It has been a while since I posted anything and also been a while since I made anything so here is a chest. About 20" wide , 22" tall and 32" long. 1/2" inch thick wood but heavy.

We couldnt find any handles in our big borg here in Iquitos so I turned the handles and riveted the leather to stay on the channels on the handles and used brass bolts to hold the leather part of the handle to the ends.

Very nice chest, indeed! Looks like a Victorian campaign chest fit for an Admiral. Did you copy the design from a museum piece or design it yourself? And the wood is exquisite, as well as the leather/brass work.

I've spent time in Cusco/Urubamba Valley/Machu Picchu, but never been to the jungle. You are really off the beaten path in Iquitos. Is that your permanent home?

Thanks for sending the lovely photo.

Bert:

The design part was easy, I drew it up on a peice of cardboard in the shop. I have always liked chests ever since my uncle brought one home from WW II which we still have at our farm in Wisconsin.

As for being permanent here in Peru I guess you would say yes. My wife and I have been here in the Amazon from Brazil up to here about 25 years and have become strangers in our own country. Everything up there has changed so much , the people, the overextended lifestyles and the everything is illegal syndrome make it much different than when we were young. Here we are still at about the era of Matt Dillon and Dodge City and it is much easier on the mind.

Great work Jim.

But one question from here in Minneapolis where the high temp yesterday was -3. What's that green stuff it's sitting on ??? :D:)

Pat:
I understand your problem, I lived in Fridley for several years and grew up in Turtle Lake, Wi.
From the attached photo of the ship taken in front of town on the river a couple of nights ago you can see we are still waiting for the Amazon to ice over.
