View Full Version : It's a curse! A never-ending lust for more tools!

There always seems to be another tool or piece of equipment that is seducing me. Something to make the job easier, neater, cleaner, healthier. Unfortunately, I only have a modest budget. So I make do with what I have, and add to it a little at a time.

Then I go to a woodworking show and see all the different routers and tables, and all the marvelous things you can do with them.

And then Festool sanders! And how about getting a dust extractor to go along with it? Heaven knows I hate all that dust that comes with sanding.

LUST strikes again! It's a curse!

God help me! I should have gone into something simple - like stamp collecting.

I know what you mean, the way I handle it is my shop is so small that if I get a new tool something has to go to make room for it.

I am getting ready to buy a wood cutting band saw, so the metal cutting band saw has to go to make room for it.

John,

Don't look at it as a curse.....Look at it as an opportunity to not have any excess cash on hand......or any credit line left.......

John,

...or a temptation to fritter it away on a retirement account.....

Don't worry. Be Happy. The government will bail you out with $600.

I've gotta object over the language being used in this thread! Only when SWMBO is around do I refer to them as "tools", that leaves the implication that I do "work" with them.

Otherwise, especially when I am around where they can hear me, I call them "my babies", "toys" or "the little finger-hunters" when they get obnoxious.:D

Right!!! I'm sure that I make too much money and won't even get that.

The way I look at it, the government can't blame the downturn in the economy on me. Last year I spent far too much on toyls.;):D

How did I ever get by with just a skillsaw and a router? Oh well: He who dies with the most toys wins! :p

Oh well: He who dies with the most toys wins! :p
I'd propose a modified version of that -
He who dies with the most *well used* toys wins - because he had fun using them!

He who dies with the most toys wins!

He who dies dies.

To the OP, moderation isn't just for wine and girlfriends ;).

Oh crap, I may have just revealed a presuppositional tendency.

don't feel bad, you're among fellow sufferers here! the tool lust does die down after you've gotten your tablesaw and router set up... and then the jointer and planer quickly follow along with the dust collector somewhere in between, a few more routers tag along, a drill press makes life just SO MUCH EASIER, another router or two and you're basically done... except for maybe a line boring drill if you're into cabinetmaking like i am along with a couple of hinge boring presses off of craigslist... and now you are FINALLY done... but then the ridgid portable table saw showed up on craigslist last week brand new for only $300... ;)

Upgrading is my problem. Let's see.....

I am on my 3rd table saw, 3rd jointer, 2nd planer (but looking at a 20 incher), 1st drum sander (but looking at a wide belt), 3rd bandsaw, 1st drill press (maybe next upgrade), 1st dust collector (looking at cyclone), etc.....

BTW, I also have 7 routers, 5 drills, 4 ROS, etc....

However, my wife just went out and spent $4,000 on a wide screen TV, so she can't complain for a while.

This year the LOML and I went to the woodworking show together. Like most shows, this one had seminars and she decided to take in the router seminar while I did some window shopping. An hour later we met up and she told me about the things that she had learned.

The instructor opened the seminar by asking how many of the participants owned a router. A flurry of hands went up. He proceeded to ask how many had two, then three, and finally four before admitting that he owned 31. She said to me, "Did you know there were three or four people in the crowd who own four routers, who could possibly need four routers. How many routers do you own?" I sheepishly had to admit that I owned four but left out the part where I had purchased my fourth just two weeks earlier.

Wow, I need to let the LOML know I'm drastically behind with only two routers.;):D

Did you say your wife went out an spend $4K on a TV?!?!?

I think you got the best of both worlds there...:D

It's like the thread I had started a week ago. My pockets are a pitstop for the tool companies. As far as #of routers go I think I'm at 8 or 9 if you include 2 bosch trimmers. That's what I get for having 2 shops.:D

Yeah and even at $3500, you know as soon as you buy it, the post office is going to increase the postage rate so you'll have to add one of those make-up stamps to mail your letter.:D

I feel the pain of everyone. Just tonight I bought my 9th router (a second M12V) so I can have one set up for rails in one side of the table and the other set up for stiles in the opposite side of the table.

I once read something written by an acquaintance named Jeffrey S about his clamp addiction........"My name is Grant Davis and I am a "ROUTER-A-HOLIC" it has been 2.5 hours since my last router purchase!

Isn't it said that the first step to recovery is admitting the addiction/problem?

I blame Norm for starting the router obsession. He is the first guy I ever saw that changed routers rather than changing bits....

I only have three routers.. Man do I need to go shopping.

John Myers
01-30-2008, 9:16 PM
Now that would be the ultimate in luxury - having one router for every bit that you have. I can see an advantage to this... you wouldn't need to a storage place for your bits! The disadvantage would be you would need a larger storage space for all those routers! I have two routers, myself. One on my router table, and the another, lighter one, for hand-held work.

I just ordered my festool RS 2 E sander today. I can see the sander collection may grow a little bit over the next couple of years.

It's nice to know I'm normal!!!

Let's see, I just purchased my third table saw and I have never used one of the two I have now. I have two band saws - 32" - 12". I have two lathes. I have two planers. One shaper. I think three radial arm saws - one 10" - two 14". Two DC of which neither is even hooked up. Only one joiner. I think only four routers. Three compressors. Various other hand power tools.

Shh, don't tell my wife.

I think I need to go to tools anonymous. :D

LOL...

Personally, I blame my dad for my tool addiction because he is a semi-tool addict...although it doesn't run completely in the blood cus my two brothers don't touch tools...

reguarding the tool upgrades, I truely hope (and it's helping) that this forum will help me buy the right tool once (knock on wood) ;)

I'm a software developer and 26 but I've been playing with tools since 12...I do mostly automotive work but in the last 5 years or so, i've been more interested in wood working. Expecially buiding car and home audio boxes...I hope to move into some decent furniture making (dressers, coffee tables, etc...) in the next several years...

bought two routers so far (junky B&D 5 years ago and a decent hitachi a couple years ago), ok hitachi TS, sold that, looking for a nice contractor or hybrid now, got many air and auto tools, dozen or so cordless tools and dremels...couple belt sanders, many others...

reguarding Steve's post, I'm still going to be looking for nice drill presses, drum sanders, DC, planers, jointers, in the next several yeras...hopefully I'll be buying things right the first time but at the same time for my purpose and for the amount of work i'll be doing...

Thanks Frank, I will do that...

unfortunately for me though, i live in the middle of wisconsin, and there isn't a craigslist section for that area yet even though there's a total of 200K people within a 50 mile radius :(
