I found an uprooted dogwood stump that my neighbor had pulled up in 2006. He said it was dead. The center is completely rotten, but I have salvaged a few small pieces that look to have potential. This is the first....a piece of root and it was very soft and light in weight. It has some very interesting soft shading and coloration, almost as if it was painted. Guess it is time to get rid of the glossy backdrop..picks up too many colors!

2 1/2" high 3 1/4" wide

Very nice work Arlan! I like the form on this one - the way the foot is smaller than the opening! Beautiful wood spalting and colors! Looks like you are getting the hang of this hollowing thing! Looking forward to your next one!

Beautiful Arlen! Always amazed at the beauty hiding inside the ugliest pieces of wood.

The pattern looks like Pangaea (the Earth before the continents drifted apart). Great form. It takes a great eye to make a work of art out of a rotting log.

Ahhh, my favorite wood. I love the colors and pattern of dogwood. And it's such a pleasure to turn. That has great form and you brought the best out of that piece. Stunning!!

beautiful piece, the grain in the wood fits the form well. That grain is so nice it almost makes you think an artist painted it on (rather than turned it).Well Done!...Bill..

Thanks for all the comments and observations. Though the pieces are small, I look forward to what the others reveal! I've got my eye on one piece that is darker wood with a couple areas of very light colored spalting...

Wow!... that is awesome. Looks like an atlas... isn't it amazing what can be found inside something that most folks would just cut up and burn...
