I am interested in purchasing my first block plane (Finally!) and I would like to have your input. I am looking at either the Stanley or Groz block planes at woodcraft. The Groz seems to be less expensive than the Stanley. Is the Stanley worth the price??

I know that LN and LV are superior in quality however I can't justify the price for either of those right now. I also understand the tuning that will need to occur with either the Stanley or the Groz.

Brian,

I know you probably don't want to hear this, but I would recommend getting neither. Both Groz and the newer staley's will need considerable "fettling" in order for them to work correctly. If you're new to planes, (and I suspect you are since a block plane is usually a first plane), and you don't want to spend the money on LV or LN, I would highly recommend a used plane.

I forget the name, but someone, or a couple people, on this forum sell and refurbish planes. hopefully one of them will get in contact with you.

good luck, planes are a lot of fun when they work correctly.
