Howdy,

A good buddy of mine just got the new Dewalt DW735 planer. It snipes the heck out of the front of every board that goes through it. He emailed DW. They told him a few things to check and they were all OK. Anybody had this trouble??? Anybody have any suggestions???

Planer leaves a fantastic finish, but the snipe is about 3" or so on the front end of every board. I reviewed planer techniques with him and I don't think it's anything that he is doing.

Thanks,

Terry

Terry: had had a 733 that did the same and Dewalt ssid to raise the infeed and out feed tables thre thickness of a dime higher the level. did that and it worked. hope that helps your friend. Mike

Mike,

That's what I told him to do too!!! :D

Problem is...the new 735 does not even have infeed or outfeed tables with it. You have to buy them seperately or make your own.

Both rollers have good pressure down on the stock and the knives seem to be set right. Beats me, but it snipes about 3 3/16" of the front of every board that goes through it.

Ok then lets have him try adding a lenght of 3/4 melamine board to the main table and add some stock at the ends on the bottom. He will have a new zero point but it don't matter/ Mike

Probably doesn't help, but I recently have bought a 735 after 'borrowing' a 733 for years. I don't have the tables, but I've not had a bad snipe problem. The 733 was worse. Neither was 'bad' relative to any other benchtop planer I've seen, but it did occur.

Hope that helps.

Terry I have the 735 with the infeed/oufeed tables. They are worth $50. They can be adjusted up or down and hold their adjustment AND they can easily be snapped on or off the planer.

Thanks everyone!!

Lanny is going to have to make some tables or use Mike's idea and use a carrier board I guess. It just seems like the planer should not be sniping this bad right out of the box.

Thanks again,

I've found that you can get snipe with any planer. One way to minimize it is to hold the board up as it goes into the planer and also hold it up as it comes out....it really does help.

Greg,

We've tried that and about everything else we could think of. I am starting to think that DW has a problem with the planer. There are a couple of similar threads going on on the other forums. There is no cutterhead lock on this planer. You can actually see the cutterhead move when the stock gets to it. Hopefully DW will figure out something.

Thanks,

Terry

Isn't it amazing that us as woodworkers keep adjusting our tolerances for sloppy or shodily made tools? I have even been amazed at the adjustments I have made in myself to allow for "it's OK for this to be this way" kinda thing. I'm going to STOP doing that and start talking to the folks that make my tools.!!!! :p

d,

I hear ya' brother. There is OBVIOUSLY a problem with the planer. Too many folks have the same problem for there to be no problem. Kinda reminds me of another buddy's compressor story. :D

Another thing to keep in mind, if you are planing stock that has not been face jointed so it lays flat on the table it will snipe when the roller push it down on to the table. No matter how good of jointer or how well it is tuned it can snipe if the reference side of the board is not flat.

I agree with trying to make manufacturers do a better job...they've had the idea far to long that what they make is close enough to make most of us happy. Maybe if this stuff was still made in the US tollerances would be better. Seems like almost everybody but the woodworkers are worrying too much about trying to squeeze the last dollar from us and not taking the pride in their work like they used to.

Just thought of something else...I'm going to a woodworking show in June and will have the opportunity to talk with several of the manufacturers directly. (Delta, Jet, Porter Cable, Dewalt and a few others. I would be interested in any problems, complaints or praises that anyone here has for them. I can talk with them and see what they have to say for themselves. PM me with any comments and I will print them and take them with me.
