Hi Sean,

Been out in the shop all day so I haven't been checking email, etc. There are a lot of good books out there:

The Complete Guide to Sharpening by Leonard Lee
Taunton's Complete Illustrated Guide to Sharpening by Tom Lie-Nielsen
Garret Hacks's book

Everyone has a different approach and they will swear by it. I read as much as I can 'cause I'm always trying to learn things. A lot of good information here. There are as many methods as there are sources of info.

There is an old Badger Pond article by RJ Whelan on 19 steps to tuning planes that is useful. It's now on Wood Central, another forum site, so I won't provide a link.

This one comes to mind.

"Hand Planing & Sharpening" by Rob Cosman

About 3/4 of the way down the page. You can download a preview of this video.

I'm not trying to be a argumentetive or anything here, or stop you from buying a book, but the absolute best info on handplanes is online, and free. I have a number of books on handplanes and handtools, but I still find the best source is online.
I will warn you upfront that you might as well buy some new printer cartridges. I've printed out a lot of material to take to the shop.;)

These folks put a lot of detail into their presentations and weren't constrained with publishing costs, or deadlines.

Here is a link to get you going.
