All,
Some of you have seen my prior thread discussing my laser eye surgery (went great) on 1/17/08, and now I need some help for the next step.

I need some new safety glasses for when I'm in the shop. I want some really good ones.

My previous safety glasses were made with my prescription, so they are no good to me anymore (maybe I should have them bronzed, they saved my eyes more than once!!).

Throw the manufacturer name and retailer or links at me! You can tell me the style you have, how much you paid, the whole works. Hold nothing back!

Thank you all!

Greg

Gregg, if your previous safety glasses were comfortable to wear, get them redone with non-corrective lenses...why waste a good safety frame if it fits you?

Jim,
I had thought of that, but they were very heavy frames since my old lenses were thicker than average. Now that I no longer need heavy lenses, I would like to get some lightweight frames also.

I am also going to get some real nice sunglasses, maybe Maui Jim, Serengeti, Oakley or Revo's.

Cost for the safety and sun glasses are (almost) no restriction. My last pair of prescription glasses cost me $700.00 out-of-pocket, so no matter what I choose for the safety and sun glasses, it should be cheaper.

I don't know if I ever mentioned this before, but the Lasik surgery was actually a reward for quitting smoking. I smoked for a loooong time and quit a year ago. I never smoked that much, maybe 5-10 cigs a day, but is also is saving me money on my life insurance rates. The cash I've saved is pretty substantial.

Thanks,
Greg

Speaking of safety glasses, and maybe a bit of thread theft... I was watching an episode of TOH or Ask TOH, forget which one. Anyway, Tom Silva had a pair of safety glasses on with split lenses in that the left and right lens was held together at the bridge via magnet.

Who makes those glasses, or something similar?

Just wondering.. I need a pair of prescription glasses though. They make bifocals? Need null lenses for reading, just need glasses for far sight now. (too many years in front of a comp.)

Was looking at http://www.rx-safety.com for prescription glasses, any other good sources?

I can say that I have a good bit of experience with safety equipment playing the role of safety coordinator for a company for several years. I tried literally dozens and dozens of types. These are my personal favorites. (http://www.safetyglassesusa.com/genblacframc.html)
Reasons
The lenses wrap and provide good side protection. Very important.
I liked the nose piece it is very comfortable
There is foam across the top edge of the lens. I have seen hard plastic frames cut the users brow when impacted.
They have adjustable ear pieces
There is a fine line between good eye protection and the glasses fogging over. I work outside alot and most glasses that covered well fogged…
They are very light
Side view distortion is minimal ( I hate ducking to miss something that isn't there)
They do not clamp the side of my head to tightly yet the do not fall off when I bend over.

All that being said the other workers had their own preferences. I kept at least 4 varieties so people could choose. The above suited about 75 %
Maybe you can try these or similar ones. At least give you some things to think about when purchasing..
Note I have tried almost all the ones from the borg and do not like them they are 2 – 3 times the price they should be for their quality.

Hey, those Uvex Genesis glasses look pretty slick! Although, I wonder if any stores in my area sell them. I really don't want to order one pair of safety glasses online. Yet, I would if I had to.

Considering how much we wear these things (if I'm in my shop, my safety glassed are ON) that's little to pay for comfort and protection.

Derail: I'm suddenlty having flashbacks to my middle school shop teacher who would insist we should wear goggles over those safety glasses, then a face shield over both and a hard hat.

That is the link to the Uvex site. you could ask them for local suppliers. We purchased them through a local safety supply house. another source would be supply houses like Graingers...If you can get to one there will be many to check out...:)

We go through 50+ pr of safety glasses a year, so economy is a very significant factor. I've bought over a dozen different brands/models of glasses in quantity over the years but have settled on PYRAMEX ZTEK's as the best compromise in function, price and fit. These are ~ $2/pr, but are IMO as good or better than glasses 5X the price. If you want to make a fashion statement, these are probably not the best choice, but if I you want protective glasses that you don't know your wearing, these are are good as any others I've worn. The reason we lose so many of these is that our students simply walk out of the shop having forgotten they have them on.

My employer would provide me any glasses I want, but I find these incredibly comfortable, the frameless design offers unobstructed vision with very little distortion. The size, shape, tension and rubberized treatment of the bows fits a wide size of wearers comfortably (I've never seen them falling off any of our users and have had no complaints). At ~$2, I don't have to worry about them getting beat up, I can throw 'em in the apron pocket, when they get scratched up, I grab a new pair

Warning:
I just ordered a couple dozen new pair of glasses which are nearly indistinguishable from these.

The new glasses however are not PYRAMEX ZTEK glasses, the angle of the lens to the bow is a few degrees different and I can really tell the difference. I don't know if the ZTEK glasses got it just right or if I've just gotten used to them.

There is an online company that deals strictly with safety gear. They do sell a wide range of safety glasses. http://www.idealsafetysales.com/Default.aspx?page=category%20search%20results&CatList=0&Parent=254&tree=247*Eye+Protection*0@@254*Safety+Glasses*0@@

This is what I found that may help you.
