I'm fairly new to this plane game and a friend gave me a #3 Stanley Handyman. Getting it sharp was no problem, (the blade edge is square to side of the blade and it ground squarly too) but it still doesn't appear to cut uniformly. It seems that I have to can't the blade to get it to come close to cutting equally across the width of the blade. The sole is flat with the exception of a small concave area in the middle of the back third. I don't have this problem with any other plane. Any idea what the issue might be because I really like the feel and size of the #3 and could see using it often.

Is the frog positioned correctly?
If the frog is skewed, or not uniformally ground, it will cause one side of the blade to extend farther out. Something to check.
