look for a set of marples.
Now sold under the brand name "Irwin" (Irwin bought Marples). The local Costco used to sell a set of them for less than $50.

I bought a set of these. The price is right for starter chisels and they have proven to be pretty good.

Not sure what your intentions are for uses, but if you buy a good set you will have them forever and they will hold an edge better so you will not have to sharpen them as often … just something to think about ..

In my book, you can't go wrong with a single 1/2" Lie Nielsen Bevel Edge chisel ($50 delivered from www.craftsmanstudio.com (http://www.craftsmanstudio.com)).

Agreed. And as noted, now sold under the Irwin brand.

These are great chisels and are easy to sharpen and they hold a good edge

Has anyone ever tried the Bahco chisels, particularly the 425 line? If company history means anything (and I'm not willing to argue that point), they sure have a great pedigree Bahco > Sandvik > Berg.

Just to be contrary, check out Grizzly's Japanese chisels. They're not badly priced, and seem so far to be really good chisels. They were pretty sharp right out of the packaging, though they probably could be sharper.

They have a set of 10, but they can be purchased individually as well. Marcus from here recommended them to me, and I feel like I need to recommend them to others as well!

Man, it's funny that you mentioned that because that is just what I did. I have two sets of older more generic chisels. I noticed that my favorite size is the half inch so, on a lark, I ordered the LN 1/2. Wow, what a chisel! There was no savings if you bought a set so, after using the 1/2", I've decided to buy a 3/8 and 1/4 later on this year. And with the cocobolo handle it is a beautiful tool.

Welcome Patrick,
Here is a fellow FAA'er and neighbor of mine. All you have to do is stop over any time.

I purchased "new old stock" Bahco set from ebay for about $60. It was a great first set and I still use them when I don't want use the LNs.

Patrick, you can get the Marples Blue Chip six piece set at Amazon for about $62 with free shipping.

http://www.amazon.com/Marples-M444-SB6-6-Piece-Chisel/dp/B0000224EV/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1201019615&sr=1-1

If you need the 5/8" you can order it at the same time for under $10.

Good luck with your decision.

Cheers,
O'Larry
