Photo Engraving

Being new to laser engraving, a budget is not available to purchase Photgrave at this time. I do however have Adobe Photoshop. Can anyone out there give me some advise on setting and steps to use to engrave on wood/marble using Photoshop ?

I have been using Photoshop for over 15 years and have lasered photos from photoshop. Get photograv. Even with Photograv, if you read some of the other discussions here, consistency can be an issue. Without Photograv it is even more difficult to achieve consistent results.
