This is my attempt at doing a Mark Cothren style black dyed, natural edged, ash bowl. It's about 12" diameter, 6" tall, dyed with black artisan dye first, then black india ink, then topped with deft satin lacquer. It has a little design help from the bugs and some end grain cracks.

Beautiful Curt. The satin finish really sets it off.

That is some serious black Curt! Great form! The texture reminds me of charcoal!

Very nice Curt, I was thinking it looks like a chunk of coal. Nice job.

Sorry, but just not diggin' it.

I like the form, but I guess I would have to see it in person to appreciate the dye job. Guess Im in it a bit for the grain:o.

Tim, I had a heck of a time making myself dye this. It would have been a very nice looking bowl with just some danish oil for the finish. But there's an annual "Black and White" competition at our local art center that accepts entries of any medium as long as it's black, white, or any shades of in between. So I wanted to enter a turning that fit the criteria. So, being a lover of wood grain myself, I took a deep breath and dyed the sucker. We'll see if it was worth it.

Curt I've been looking at this for a couple days now and I just can't come up with the right words. It is just great. I love the shape and even like the color.
Thanks for sharing.

Well, curt, at least you had good reason. Good luck with the piece in the competition, and please let us know how you do. Like I said, I like the form.
