View Full Version : Cutting 2mm (5/64") strips

Good day

The title is "2mm (5/64)" but it can be any thickness of strips....even less...

So...the sled is made of 3/4" Melamine board 35½" long and 8" wide but, you choose yours.

I drilled 3/8" "Vacuum holes" but first I drilled 1/4" as a pilot hole (easier to control the drill) and than went with the 3/8" drill bit to the end of the drill length

I drilled the holes at 4" intervals but I think that the more holes, the better (say, every 2½"~3") even though, I did not have any problems with the vacuum pressure.

I drilled 3/4" hole dia at the "end of the drill line"

The "Box" can be made of anything...I made it from pieces of chip-board and Melamine (that's what I found in the attic)

I used my converted Shop-vac on "Minimum" power.

I strongly recommend to use a "Feather board" to hold the work and sled firmly to the fence before entering the blade...and of course the splitter or riving knife...

Regards
niki

Thank you so much for your kind comments

Well, you know, "Necessity...."

Right now, I'm on my "hibernation" (too cold to work in the garage) but from the next spring, I shall have to cut many thin strips and it's good to be ready...

Did you not like the idea of making a thin ripping jig on the other side of the blade? Like this one from Rockler?

http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=18056&filter=thin%20rip

I have to admit yours is way cooler. Nice job!

Thank you Ray

With the Rockler jig I would have to reset the fence after every cut...

I was looking for those pictures and I found them...

Small modification
I routed a 3/8" deep slot from the first to the last hole and that improved the vacuum holding power that is acting now on bigger area and the grabbing is even better (much better)

I also added an adjustable pusher.

Here are the pics, without any text...for a change...

niki

For cutting thin strips, my choice is the Grip-Tite feeder setup. No moving the fence, no kickback, and the wood is pushed thru with the next piece. It works on very long boards or 6" long pieces.

Here is a link to a thin cuts video on youtube

The best part is that this setup also works for dadoing a sheet of plywood.
