In order to go beyond traditional boxes I turned this sycamore box with the Ecoulen chuck. The difficulty lie in the fact that no abrasive can be used as the wood turns in very strange position making the sanding quite hazardous. I must say I didn’t use any finish either as this is still an exercise prior to have full control of the technique.

Claude, very very nice. Yep sounds like a LOT of hand sanding for sure. I wonder if you could sand each position before moving on to the next one, tear out would sure be a nightmare tho.Good luck and let us know if you figure something out.

Paul, no sanding at all, you see the piece as it went out of the lathe, I have not yet put any finish on it either (and I don't know whether I'll put some.

Really cool piece! I'd try some wipe on poly, but the no-finish finish looks pretty good as is!

Thanks to my daughter and to her boy friend who is a "fashion photographer" I now have something much nicer to show, even if we are still talking of the same piece of wood.
