I plan on making a flag display case as a gift for my father. His dad (a WWII vet) passed away over a year ago and he cant' find a case that he likes, so I figured I would make one. I would like to include a species that is specific to mississippi, as my grandfather was born there. I also plan to use purple heart as he was awarded this, and am still looking into a wood to symbolize the silver star he was awarded. Any suggestion would be helpful.

The two woods that come immediately to mind are pine and oak -- both have played a big part in the economy and history of the state.

The magnolia is the state tree (and state flower).

Hope this gives you some ideas.

maybe a silver inlay, or "silver" hardware.

Thats a great idea, and thanks for sharing (and for his serving !! )

thanks for the info, I like both the state tree idea and the silver hardware option
