I've made face frames using dowels and now bisquits. I'd like to know how you do it? I'm being seduced by a friend that has a Kreg pocket hole jig.

How do you make face frames? I'm about to start on another kitchen for my wife starting w a 96" x 54" pantry.

Biscuits - that way you don't have an ugly hole staring at you from where you put the face frames on.

Psst Nancy. Holes are on the back side of frame, unseen;):D

For me it depends on what I building... A curio cabinet from exotics I'd use mortis and tennon.. if I'm making kitchen cabinets or a utility cabinet out of say poplar to be painted I'd use pocket screws.

I use dowels (dowlemax) for the same reason Nancy mentioned. I don't like the big ugly holes pocket screws make. If I was doing it for a living I might not care since you can't really see the holes but I'd know they were there.

All face frames on cabinets I use pocket holes. Also aprons on small end tables.

Kreg for building and installing the face frames.

Occasionally if I don't want to do an applied panel or frame end I will just glue and clamp that side.

I also mount the FF to the carcass with pocket holes, too - just to bug Nancy :D

Kreg Pocket Hole Jig for me.....

I haven't used any biscuits since I got the pocket hole jig.:D

I use biscuits/glue to attach and align the face frames to the cabinet. If there are any internal rails/stiles, I attach them with pocket screws/glue.

I just nail 'em.

...and when that eventually fails, I use my D~o~m~i~n~o.....

Pocket screws, and nail/glue to the box.

If its a higher end job then I would skip the nails and biscuit or spline.

This is for cabinet grade build only.

Almost all cabinetmakers use pocket screws & nail/glue to the boxes, pocket screws are the only way IMHO.

I used to use pocket screws but now I use a Dowelmax. It is easier to get an absolutely perfect fit.

I'm not much of a cabinet maker but a pocket hole jig comes in handy for lots of things around the shop. Mine is mounted on a cart so it is always ready. See thread.

Kreg sells videos that illustrate building things with pocket holes.

I use high quality 3M duct tape to make the face frame and double bubble gum to hold them on..... Ok, I don't use bubble gum to hold them on.

I use the DowlMax dowel system to make the face frames and up until the last cabinet I built I use brads and glue to mount them. The last cabinet I made I use pocket screws and glue to mount the frames to the cabinets.

All of the above. I use pocket screws to hold the face frame together, the bottom in, and the sides and back together. But I use dowels or biscuts to attached the face frame to the carcass. In other words, pocket screws if you have no chance of seeing the holes, and dowels/biscuts where the holes would be able to be seen.

I use dominos to assemble the face frames and attach to the carcase with the Sommerfeld method of offset tongue and grooves.

I have only done one cabinet so far, but I used pocket screws via Kreg jig, dominoes to align on front of cabinet, then a few pocket screws and glue to attach the frame to the cabinet.

pocket screws cut with the porter cable pocket cutter OR steve clardy's affordable machine. the lower angle minimizes the shifting that occurs with the kreg.

Current = Sommerfeld method - offset tongue and groove and pocket screws.

Once I can "justify" it = Sommerfeld method (face frame to sides and shelves) + Domino (hold face frame together).

I found that the Sommerfeld method keeps everything in alignment and gives more glue surface. Haven't had an alignment problem yet.

I use biscuits for both frame construction and attaching the face frame to the case. Haven't had any problems yet and don't have any brad holes to fill/disguise.

if you like using the biscuit jointer for face frames, check out lamello's fixo self-clamping biscuit:
