#2- P&N makes good unhandled tools, as does Thomson.

Tony,
Doug Thompson's tools cost roughly the same as Sorby's or P&N's but will far outlast them and stay sharp longer. Doug Thompson is the only one I know that says "If you don't like the tool for any reason, return it to me and I'll refund your money!" I bought one of his 5/8" bowl gouges and a few other tools. I've turned two bowls and the bowl gouge is still sharp. So far I have no intention of returning them.

I can't recommend P&N based on the poor fit and finish of a 1.25" roughing gouge that a friend purchased:(. The tool had multiple ridges of metal left on the inside flute that prevented you from getting a sharpened continuous edge. Their sales representative here in the US (Greg Jensen) refused to replace the tool even though it is definitely a manufacturing defect:(:(.

A number of the tools at Packard Woodworking and Craft Supplies USA are available unhandled, but Doug Thompson's are hard to beat at any price.
