hello everyone, it's been a while.

I have been trying new mediums and finally turn some soapstone. boy, this was fun. bought a Holdfast vacuum chuck and this what I was able to do. now my vortex has gotten deeper and wider. I used my Sorbey 1/2 and 3/4 round nose for the whole turn. the wood at the base is walnut.

hope you like it.

Hi Laurie,

I, too, am a stoneturner, and your piece is very nicely done. The shape and finish allow the texture and characteristics of the stone to speak for itself and they show very well.

Very nice Laurie! Great form and color combination with the walnut. I have zero experience with stone - so have no reference to gauge size. Could you give the dimensions and also how you finished the stone? Also - what did the stone do to your scrapers?

this piece stands about 4.5 in. high and the rim is about 5 in. across. as for my scrapers, I just needed to resharpen a few times. (I did find one embedded stone) sanded down to 8000 and used a gel poly (3 coats)

That is one nice piece. The color, form, and the stone make for a show stopper.

Great piece. How was it for the tools? No problems with dulling?

Wow! The contrast between the wood and stone is really pleasing! I have to resist getting started doing this.... the vortex is swirling!

WOW Laurie,
That is a terrific piece! Where did you get the soap?
It looks very thin, how thick is it?
keep going!

Hello
Wow, love it!!!! Ditto on where you got the stone. Also what method did you use for attaching to the lathe? LOL my new 1/2 inch thick scraper is calling me to try stone.
Again wow and great job.

Really nice work! I am wondering what your impressions of the Holdfast Vacuum chuck system were?
