We bought some used 1990 vintage Drexel Heritage Chippendale style chairs for a dining table I built off of Craigs List. A few of the chairs have a problem with the seat portion, in that they are giving way. The seat portion is made of what looks like oriented strand board that has been put in a press to fashion a depression where your butt sits to allow for more foam cushion. To me this seems like a good idea to make a more comfortable seat but poses a problem in strength as well as my problem, which is how to make a new seat. I could just cut a piece of plywood and upholster it but, I kind of like the idea of the depression area for extra comfort. The depression is almost 1 1/4" deep and 12" or so around. I guess I could layer a few pieces of plywood and hog out the depression? Anyone seen this type of seat? Any thoughts on how to make up a new one?
