Finished my first batch of bowls and thought I'd post 'em. Thanks for looking.
This is bowl #1, a practice bowl with friend. I didn't sand it while it was on the lathe and had to hand sand it, apply a coat of Watco and hand wax it. Cherry.

Bowl #2, the first one on my own. This is box elder, with one coat of Watco and buffed with the Beall system.

After my first success, I had a little mishap on #3. Notice where the tool caught on the inside lip. It exploded and flew across the garage. It used to be chestnut.

Bowl #4 is another box elder, turned a little thinner than the other. It's got a little knot hole in it, but has a little curl in it too.

I used walnut for #5. I love the way walnut turns.

Bowl #6 was a surprise for me. I bought all of the blanks (except #1) rough turned and seasoned from Woodcraft and couldn't tell what figure was in them. This last one is silver maple and has a ton of figure in it.

They all look really great (with the exception of the cracked one, it would have looked really great!) I think that some people like the knots, because they add character. I wouldn't look at that as a negative. There aren't any apparent tool marks, the finishes and forms all look great. Good job!:)

James....for your first bowls.....You are doing great! Beautiful work!

The explosion..........Yup...that is why you wear a face shield!

Very impressive work considering these are your firsts! They all have great form! Really like the curly maple bowl! Have fun turning and like Ken already stated: Wear your faceshield!

Those look great. Too bad about the catch. But I'd wager a guess that it is still chestnut. :D

That is a great start. I wish my first ones turned out that well.

Very nice looking pieces. Great shape on the curve and the beveled rim is a nice touch.

All great looking bowls for your first. I like the walnut myself. As Ken said on the chestnut one that is why we need face shields.

Purty bowls! For firsts, they're nigh perfect, except that one that's still chestnut. :)
Really well done... (I like that first one the most).
