Anybody got any helpful suggestions on finishing this extremely waxy stuff?

Wax? :D :D :D

Seriously, you could probably use shellac at least as a sealer if not the final finish.

Robert, we use LV for all of our belaying pins. The stuff is full of resins and is naturally self lubricating (which is why we use it for the pins). Those resins also prevent pretty much any top coating from adhering well.

We have tried all kinds and eventually they all fail. Mind you, these are also kept out in the weather year round, so that probably has a lot to do with it. The fastest to fail was spar varnish. Shellac didn't peel/chip but it wore off pretty quick.

We stopped putting anything on them and just put them to use right after turning them.

BTW, what are you making?

Be well,

Doc
