View Full Version : Prayers for my parents, please

Good morning, all.

As you are part of my on-line family, I ask for your prayers for my parents. I think I'm very lucky at my age to still have both of them. They have been married for 63 years, but now adversity has hit again. Daddy had a stroke yesterday morning, and is now hospitalized for what might be a long-term commitment. He is conscious and lucid, but his left side is paralyzed and he is having trouble talking and being understood. Mother says that after a few days hospitalization, he will need to go to a rehab facility for therapy. She is staying with him at the hospital, sleeping on the couch and helping take care of him. He will be 88 years old next week, and this does not bode well. He is a cancer survivor and had quintuple bypass surgery 9-1/2 years ago, and also has emphysema. Mother is 82, has diabetes and high blood pressure.

I'm 1300 miles away and have been told very emphatically that there is no reason for me to go to Tennessee now--Mother says that she may need my help more later, but not right now. I'm not ready to lose my daddy, so if you would say a small prayer in passing to the diety of your choice, I would so appreciate it. Who knows? Prayers from all over the world just might make a difference.

Thank you.

Nancy

Nancy,
Your parents are in my prayers.
I was in the same place as you several years ago. It isn't easy. I was very fortunate, I did get to say good bye to both of my parents, that was very important to me.

They will be in my prayers, Nancy. I consider myself very fortunate, as my parents were married about 65 years, and I was 61 years old before I lost either one.

Nance, thoughts and prayers delivered. My father passed away in January of 2002 at age 76. My brother keeps telling how he wished Dad lived another few weeks to see his beloved Patriots win their 1st Super Bowl.:o:) Keep your chin up...it's in the Lord's hands now.

Dear Nancy,

As I started to read your post I thought I was reading about my mom and dad. I will email you privately, but I wanted you to know that I will pray for them and also for you because I know what it is like to go through this. I was able to take care of them so I know the pain of not being there in your mind.

Have your mom give you the password (or whatever you need) to actually speak with the doctor...this will ease your mind! I would also look into the rehab center and their policies. Also their care for stroke patients.

You and your parents are in our thoughts and prayers on this end to 2007!

Sincerely,
Phyllis

Prayers and positive thoughts DO help. Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers, and here's an update:

Apparently they got Daddy to the hospital in time to start good treatment, because as of this morning (Wednesday), he is talking better, he can now turn his head to the left (couldn't on Sunday), and has almost full use of his left arm. His left eye is still "frozen" in place and he has no control over his left leg, so he's not out of the woods yet. He is being transferred to a rehab facility today in Martin, TN, the next town to the east about 10 miles, but he balked and fought going there until he was TOLD that he was going for the therapy he needs. Mother anticipates that he'll be back home within a month. He says he feels fine, but sounds very depressed and "resigned to his fate", as he puts it. I'll probably be heading east around the end of this month, rather than waiting until March as I had planned.

Please keep my dad in your prayers...they are all helping. Thank you.

Nancy, really, that is wonderful news! I'm sure your Dad is not happy going to the new facility, but unfortunately with all the new health care laws and medicare along with other insurance companies, they do ship all patients to the rehab facilities. I will be praying that your dad will keep his spirits up (most important thing), and that he will know that he will come out of there! Take care!

Sincerely,
Phyllis

Sorry to chime in so late Nancy. Our thoughts are with you and your dad. Don't give up on rehab! When Inta's mom had a stroke rehab worked wonders, though it was slow and hard work.

Let us know if there's anything we can do.

First, I want to thank you all, whether you posted here or not, for your prayers and positive thoughts for my parents, especially for my dad. They work.

I just talked to my dad on the phone, and he has made such good progress that he will be released from the rehab hospital on February 1 to go home, with a 3-day-a-week therapy regimen to follow. He still isn't "well", and probably never will be, but at least he can walk with a walker, can feed himself, and will be at home in his own bed or his own recliner, with his cat on his lap, and be able to be a part of the family again. I am so thankful, and so grateful to all of you--my internet family--for your prayers and good wishes.

THANK YOU ALL!!
