When a drill press is said to be 15 or 17 inches, what is the actual measurement referencing? I can't find any measurement on my 15 inch press that is 15 inches. I was trying to figure out what the benefit would be from the 17 inch machine. Thanks.

It has been awhile but I think it is the distance from the middle of your quill (drill chuck) to the upright in the back. You would double it.

it is in reference to what diameter circle it will drill a hole in the center of.

Harry's got it. Commonly referred to as 'swing'. A 15" swing or a 15" DP would have a reach from the post to the bit of about 7 1/2". This number is subjective as in band saws. A 17" DP is about 8 1/2" from quill center to post face.
