I am looking at a source for replacement planer blades for my grizzly portable planer. The stock ones seem to chip way to easy and it takes way to much off in order to get rid of the nick. Replacement cost for stock is almost $40 with shpping. I don't mind spend money on blades that last, but Grizzly blades are fragile.

I'm glad you said that. I was just going to purchase some knives for my griz. 8" jointer. The ones that came with it held up well until I tried to hone them. I don't know of a good source other than grizzly and would like to find out.

I am looking at a source for replacement planer blades ....

If you know the size (length, width, and thickness) of the blades, you should be able to find a number of reputable sources with a Google search for "Planer Blades" or "Planer Knives"

One example: Freud Planer Knives from Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_nr_p_4_1?ie=UTF8&rs=228013&keywords=Planer%20knife&rh=n%3A228013%2Ck%3APlaner%20knife%2Cp%5F4%3AFreud )

Here's where I get mine from: http://globaltooling.bizhosting.com/planer_knives.html
All there knives are made from T-1 Tool steel. Which I found holds an edge a lot longer than the M-2 the most knives are made from.

Try Infinity (http://www.infinitytools.com/). I have a set of their knives in my Dewalt. I believe they are of better quality than the OEM knives.

You could also try Brian at Holbren dot com. He is great to deal with and had a heck of a sale just before Christmas on Jointer and planer blades - not sure about portables though so shoot him an email.

You could try estausa.com or template-services.com if you want carbide.

Many of the portable planers use knives that are somewhat unique to the machine. You may not be able to source them elsewhere. For "regular" jointers and planers with standard heads, there are many sources as folks have pointed out.

These people do portable planer blades.

http://www.sharpco.ca/welcome.html

I would email them to see if they have a blade that matches Grizzly.

They state that they do these tools:

Makita • Black & Decker • Skil
Hitachi • Ryobi

So maybe one matches Grizzly, or their web site is not up to date and they do have Grizzly.

For standard knives, I second Global Tooling. Great product, great pricing, and great customer service. I received a knife that had a nick in it, and five days later I had a replacement. (They are on the west side of US and I'm on the east.)

Thanks Mike but I don't have any blade that is double sided or has holes/slots in it. I'm pretty sure that rules out all the portable planers. I am looking at getting them made for the DeWalt but not sure yet.
