Curved fireplace mantel (pics)

I got into a woodworking conversation with a guy on the internet on another forum completely away from woodworking. He showed me these pictures of a fireplace mantel he did for a freinds wife. Pretty nice job. I would have to go back and check, but I think he told me he did it with oak plywood and solid oak that was kerfed like the dickens on the back.
