I know they are out there but where? I'm basically finished with my current project (my shop) and need to start some new ones but I don't have a source for wood in my area. Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,
Dave

Dave, you live in the heart of lumber nirvana...literally. Contact the Hardwood Lumber Manufacturers Association of Pa at 717-312-1244 and request a copy of their membership listing. There are dozens of choices in Central and North Central PA. One I happen to like after talking to them at length is Lewis Lumber in Picture Rocks. Very nice folks and they have outstanding cherry as well as things like lyptus. (www.lewislp.com (http://www.lewislp.com)) Another "must consider" is Irion Lumber in Wellsboro. (http://irionlumber.com) Absolutely worth the drive.

I know a guy with a sawmill in Bloomsburg. I don't know if he'd want me posting his number ... he's not a pro, but the prices are good. All local stuff as far as I know ... walnut, red oak, pine. Drop me a line and I'll fill you in.

I've heard good things about Lewis Lumber but I haven't been up there.

Thanks for the replies!

I've heard of Lewis Lumber and they are my stand-by. The reason is that they are over an hour from me (State College). Irion is even farther away but they do ship. I will definitely give Lumber Manuf. Assoc. a call.

Mike Morgan might be a good option. I'll have to look through the threads to see what people think of his service.

James, I'll contact you if I decide to try out your lumber source. Thanks.

I haven't been there, Bryan, but it's on my future hit-list if I decide to do a serious "road trip"

Dave, I was remiss in mentioning Mike Morgan (see his manufacturer's forum here at SMC) and he delivers with excellent pricing. And say hello to "Happy Valley" for me... ;) 'Lived there from June of 1975 through March of 1979, as it were...

Popped into Lewis Lumber yesterday (1st time) and left with $200+ worth of assorted boards. African mahogany, Paduak, birdseye maple, wenge, hickory, and regular maple. They have a good selection of others as well...zebra, ipe, purpleheart, etc. along with the usuals. most in 4/4, many in 8/4, and some in 10/4 and thicker. I didn't ask or see any burl, don't know if its all dimensioned/ruogh cut.
Nice place and very friendly folks there too.

Good to see another State College resident! I usually buy my hardwoods from Alderfer Lumber down in Mount Pleasant Mills. They have a great selection and are great to deal with.

You'll definitely need to visit Irion in Wellsboro. I usually drive up once or twice a year. Wellsboro is a beautiful area and it's a pleasant drive up. Although, I did hit a deer when I was returning home from one of my trips up. :(

Rick, thanks for the update on Lewis Lumber. I'm definitely going to check them out for my next project.

Christopher, I've never heard of Alderfer Lumber. They even have a website. How long does it take you to get there from State College? I do plan to visit Irion sometime.
