This is from the Woodsmith plans, but in red oak (the original plan was cherry). Finished with a couple coats of Zinsser sealer then a couple coats of water based poly. Obviously, photography is not my day job.

Crisp lines and good color. I can see why the design appealed to you. The recipient will treasure it. Nicely done.

Very nice looking bed.
I’ve got a procedure questions to ask. (I’m making a day bed with slats.) What are the thickness and width of the slats and did you cut a mortise for each one, or did you just cut a groove in the two rails, then put individual “fillers” between each slat?

Looks great. I'm building the same bed....well not yet, but I have the plans and pile of Red Oak in the garage acclimating. In a follow on to James question, did you follow the plans and use a router to cut the dados, then glue up the top and bottom rails? Even with a jig I'm not that confident in my alignment using a router on that many cuts.

The slats are 0.5" thick and (I think) 2" wide. As mentioned by Sean, the original plans say to router the slat grooves all the way through both halves of a rail, then glue up the halves to make the rail (and do that for all 4 rails). Since I have a decent mortiser, I made the rails full size and mortised them directly. This also cut down on the amount of wood required for the slats (since they could be shorter).

Charile, that's a great looking project. Congratulations on a job well done.:D

Thanks Charlie. I don't have a mortiser, and was planning to glue up first, drill out with a forstner and cleanup with my monster 1/2" mortise chisel. It'll be slower going, but with my current skills and tools it should cause me less frustration.

Sean,
If you can find boards thick enough (and cost effective), you can skip the glue up.

Good job! Now get started on the dresser, mirror, night stands, etc. that go with the bed. They will keep you busy for months and remember to sign everything, your grandchildren will treasure them. I am currently working on an enlarged dresser, the original I made is really too small.

nicely done- you should be proud of that.

a question on your finish- could you provide a bit more info and maybe a close up picture. It looks like the overall effect I am after for a bookcase I am working on just now and would dearly appreciate more information!

thanks

Mike

Mike,
I'll try to get a close up tonight. The finish was two coats of Zinsser Bullseye SealCoat followed by two coats of General Finishes Polyacrylic water based top coat (semi-gloss). Of course, sanding between all the coats...

Nice Bed! That will be my first project once I get my shop set up.

What about those floors, they look like vertical grain bamboo? Which brand?

Mike,
Here's a couple close ups of the finish.

Ben,
Bingo- it is vertical grain bamboo. Longstrip click bamboo- I think it's a generic brand (got it via ifloor.com).

Nice work Charlie, and an inspiration to us all.
I really like mission furniture so your decision to use oak made it more authentic (IMHO):). It looks great.
