Here's the scenario. You've got $100 to spend on a woodworker friend. You want him to be happy. He has lots of tools, but you haven't really snooped around, so you don't know for sure what's in all the nooks and crannies of his lair.

What is his $100 gift?

A nice blade, some nice wood, a good wwing book, a nice hand plane, a gift card to his favorite wwing store (as a last resort:rolleyes:). If he has a spouse, I'd arrange to take a look in his shop when he's not there, then decide.

Amen. I might rank the wood first, but then again I can't find much in the way of suppliers less thatn 100 miles away.

Personally, I think that the gift care to his/her favorite woodworking store is the better choice in most cases. Tools and tooling are very personal things and unless you have a specific item that you know is on his/her "gift list", it's probably more comfortable all around to let them make the final choice.

Wood, wood and more wood. Seriously, the place I go to get hardwood and exotics always has a section where there is all kinds of different wood for sale. I always look over there when I go. One time I picked up a nice bloodwood board and they had a stack of yellowheart real cheap.

a Gift card from one of the Woodworking Supply houses." Rockler, Woodcraft, Lee valley" or find out what his favorite supply house is. I'd stay away from the HD,lowels or mernards. OR maybe a saw mill or hardwood supply place. If he been into woodworking for a while he might be hard to buy for unless you come right out and ask him. :)

I vote for the wood!

Each and every one of us has different ideas about which tools are good to do which tasks. Thus what seems the best tablesaw blade or measuring device etc to one person is perhaps not right for the next person. But we are united about the wood. I am 100% sure each and every one of you could pick out some nice wood that I personally would appreciate and find something meaningful to do with. Thats the great thing about woodworking, there are so many new kinds to try .................

My old stand-by for years has been a gift cert to Woodworker's Supply--since he works there, that $100 goes farther for him than for others. However, I came out and asked him this year what he wants/needs in the way of tools and the answer was "nothing.":confused::( So he's getting a gift cert from our local lumber supplier so he can buy something that he wouldn't ordinarily buy. Darn his hide, he buys stuff as it comes in the door at the store and I can't get ahead of him.:(:rolleyes:

I'm definately with Todd on this one. Cash is best.

Last year my relatives all gave me gift cards. Fortunately most of them were from Sears and I had planned to buy one the Craftsman 14" band saw. This year I want cash instead. I hope to put enough together to buy a Festool sander. Hopefully SWMBO will allow me to supplement what I get just like she did with the band saw last Christmas.;):D

Gift cards are great, but for something more personal, here are a few ideas:

- A bronze Lie Nielsen low angle block plane from www.lie-nielsen.com (http://www.lie-nielsen.com), www.craftsmanstudio.com (http://www.craftsmanstudio.com) or your local Woodcraft -- $95
- A PAX 1776 Dovetail 10 x 15 rip saw or 10x15 crosscut saw from www.ToolsforWorkingWood.com (http://www.ToolsforWorkingWood.com) -- on sale for $103-ish
- A pair of Lie Nielsen Bevel Edge Chisels or mortise chisels (1/4" & 1/2") from www.lie-nielsen.com (http://www.lie-nielsen.com/) or www.craftsmanstudio.com (http://www.craftsmanstudio.com/) -- $50 each
- A 3/8" or 1/2" Ray Isles English Mortise Chisel from www.ToolsforWorkingWood.com (http://www.toolsforworkingwood.com/) - $85
- A Veritas MK.II Honing Guide plus the Veritas camber roller assembly and skew registration jig for the MK.II from www.LeeValley.com (http://www.leevalley.com/) -- $55 + $20 + $27 = $102

Best of luck.

If I were your friend, my priorities would be:

1) Cash
2) Gift Card to Fav. WW Store
3) Magazine Subscription(s)
4) Gift Card for BORG

Bill, Your best bet would be to do some actual snooping. If he's married, ask his wife to let you look around while he's not there.. If not, go over with a six-pack and ask him to show you around his shop and keep your eyes peeled. Spend as much time as you can and get and idea what he's lacking. Maybe a combination waterstone or a couple clamps-everyone needs more clamps. Bessy Uni-clamps are about 28 bucks a piece and they are not heavy. Great for smaller projects.

Last chance for your thoughts on this.

(I don't think I'll do the gift card. Too impersonal.)

How many clamps does he have? Some 24" bessys or Jet clamps would be a nice gift.

Most woodworkers would love it, unless they already have 50 k-bodies.

here's what I'm talking about:

Also, I use this on just about every project:

http://www.amazon.com/Behlen-Burn-In-Kit-Restorers/dp/B000A2N9B0

It's a iron that melts shellac sticks to fill in nail holes. It takes a little practice to get good at it, but it's amazing once you learn (tell him to practice on scrap first). If you know what would species he uses, you can buy the knife seperately and buy some sticks that match the color he generally uses. The above $99 kit has an assortment.

One last thought:

A unique vintage tool from Patrick Leach (supertool) (http://www.supertool.com/forsale/december07.htm)

(Apologies if that link isn't allowed.)

I just remembered something. ( which is unto itself very rare). Last year I was in Woodcraft and they had a sale on exotic boards. I picked a few out that I never had before. They are labled so I can identify what they are. I put them in a special place in my wood rack and every so often, I go over there and try to think what I am going to do with them. I bought a few different species and I think I paid about $15 bucks a board.( 4')

A couple years ago I mentioned to my wife I was looking to buy a chisel. I needed a 3/16 for some mortise work. I said nothing more about it, bought a chisel and got the project done. That Christmas I was given an excellent set of chisels from sears, complete with a vinyl pouch.

The moral of the story goes that a gift card, as impersonal as it may seem, beats the dismayed enthusiasm look on someones face any day.

I vote for a gift card to http://www.thebestthings.com/index.html

Jim
