Just finished a couple of Christmas present bowls (bowls #3 & #4 for me). The first is hard maple (9inches in diameter) and is going to Grandma. It was from a 10 dollar stump I scored a few months ago (can't wait to get into the "good" part of that stump). The second is silver maple (11.5 inches in diameter), it is on its way my sister for a salad bowl (mineral oil finish). The silver mable is from a tree that was water stressed and died just before it was cut, any idea if that explains the cool colors? I don't regularly see so much color in maple.

Nicely done in both projects Joel! It's hard to believe you've only been turning.....what is it....6 months?

Nicely done!

Joel, I'm by far an expert on the coloration in your maple. It simply looks like mineral staining. In most cases it is caused by drying maple to slowly. I have seen this in flood plains maple trees that I have processed also.

Joel great bowls I love maple. Cut some of the stump and throw some shavings on it and let it spalt.
If you look at the maple bowl I just posted it has some of the same colors. I find the coloration quite often at the base of big trees around here in Pa
