I need help with sizing hinges for the top of a rather large cedar chest. The chest is 42w x 24d x 18h and has maple legs and ¾-inch solid eastern red cedar panels. Here are a couple shots "in progress." The first is an end panel, and the next one is a dry fit (upside down) of the carcase. It is now glued up and the top is complete, sans hinges. It is one heavy dude! Suggestions for number and size for the hinges please! Many thanks.

How about a panio hinge with a couple of Sugatsune "soft close" pistons.

More than likely two each , one each side . Any idea on the weight of the hatch?

Thanks, Paul. The Sugatsune line is new to me. I checked out their web site--pretty nifty stuff! Thanks for pointing it out to me.

Oh, and I'm guessing the top is between 10 and 15 pounds.

Rockler sell toy box hinges that rork great and they are only 5 dollars each. I used them along with a piano hinge for the toy chest I built for my girls.

Those soft close deals are SWEET ! The Rockler stuff works but I can't call it sweet. If you try those Sugatsune's you'll agree;)
