I think I found the answer. When I turned my miniature goblets this weekend I did not have one catch.
I think my problem is that I get in a hurry to up the speed of the lathe. Faster leaves a smoother cut in most cases but it also seems to cause more problems with me.
I didn't pick up the bowl gouge once this weekend and did everything with the 3/8" spindle gouge. I think the fastest I spun the wood while using a metal tool was about 1200 RPM.
It's either the speed or it is a lot easier to be confident while doing small pieces. =) I also modified the grind on my gouge a bit and the wings now come much further back.
