Has anyone ever turned one? Where do you get your parts?? Thinking about making for the father-n-law. I have googled it but not really coming up with anything.

I have been thinking about making one, but haven't gotten around to it yet. There are several turners here that make them that I'm sure will chime in. CSUSA and PSI both sell game call kits and parts. Heres a link to the ones at CSUSA-http://www.woodturnerscatalog.com/store/Projects___Game_Calls?Args=

I am a call turner, if you want to make a duck call there are 3 basic ways, 1 make your own stopper, takes a lot of time and knowledge, 2 buy a kit, and 3 buy the stopper insert ready made and tuned.

If you are looking to make a duck call that sounds good. Look up Echo Duck Calls on the Internet, they sell the inserts for a real reasonable price. You have to use the phone, they do not list the inserts on the website. These stopper inserts are tuned, sound good and come in clear, smoke, bourbon and green. Avoid the green, I think it is hideous, but then you may like it

If you are just wanting a noisemaker, Woodcraft, Hut, CSUSA and PSI all sell kits. No where near the sound of the Echo and more work.

Since this is for your father-in-law I would get the Echo. Then all you have to do is get a 1.5" square blank 3" long, drill a 5/8" hole. To turn the barrel in the shape of a duck call body, you will need a pen mandrel and some homemade cone bushings to center the body on the pen mandrel.

I will send you a pm with my email, I think I have photos of this some where.

Shane,
I turned a couple a few years back. I got the kits from woodturnerscatalog.com. They are easy to make and you can also get the bushings that allow you to turn them on a pen mandrel. I gave one of them to a friend who is an avid duck hunter. He loved the look of it (cocobola), but said it sounded better than any of his high-priced calls. Maybe I just got lucky on my first one, but that was praise enough for me. I look forward to turning another one soon.

I just ordered mine from CSUSA a couple of weeks ago. I purchased 2 squirrel calls and one double reed duck call. I found some marble wood last week that will become the duck call.

As I have never hunted with calls I cannot comment on if they are good, bad, or indifferent. Sounds like Marvin has some experience though. I do know that the double reed duck call I got from CSUSA really sounds like a duck if you do it right though.

The "bushing" kit from CSUSA seemed to work pretty well for me. There are other companies that make aluminum mandrels for turning calls but the HUT one at CSUSA should get you by unless you are going to start making them professionally. You can also make a wooden mandrel and use o-rings if you don't want to buy the kit. But... I recall the pen mandrel bushing kit as being inexpensive in the grand scheme of things. Just don't over tighten the nut! I actually split my stopper my tightening too much.

These are the result of the CSUSA stuff:

I have a coworker that ask me about making calls for him. I said that if he would buy the book on call making I will make as many as he wants. The 19.95 must be to much for him, still no takers on the offer. I have not made one yet.

I too am interested in making a call. I believe Tim Yoder will be making one in his upcoming season of Woodturning Workshop which I think may begin next month or soon after. But I'm only guessing as he pictures one in the new advertisement. I always prefer to watch rather than read how.
