Adjustable Height Desk

Has anyone built an adjustable height computer desk? I'm thinking of something that functions like these:

Several employees in my office have standup computer desks, but I'd love to build something that offers the ability to both sit and stand.

I am having a hard time figuring out how the adjustment mechanism would work (I'm thinking wood "sleeves" for legs, a bunch of threaded rod.... )

I want to build my own to match the cherry office desk set that I already have ...

You may want to look at so used office furniture places and buy one. Then take it home and replace all the junk wood with your own wood.

At work we had some at one time and the left system was really made very well and would not be something that could easily be done in a home shop.
The ones we had could have been very easily redone with different woods and been made to look really nice.

There are also table bases which incorporate the gas struts common in work chairs: http://bellahardware.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=40_41_43 . They might not lift a big desk, but if you just want a spot for your laptop, it might do the trick.

On one of the pages they show a close up of their adjustment mechanism. Couldn't be simpler really.

if it isn't an open base desk you could use a lift system for tv's accuride came out with a new one for flat panel tv's and anton(spelling?) has them I worked on a lectern that needed to raise and lower to the speakers height. it worked pretty cool. that was back in the early 90's though.
