Getting rid of ice on a composite patio deck?

What's the best way to remove ice on a deck in lieu of physically scaping or chipping it off? Or, perhaps just improve traction by using sand? The deck is made from a composite material (Fiberon or Trex). I have been told to not use salt because it will permanently stain the deck. Any suggestions?

On the front walk I use a granular product that is not salt, that I bought at one of the borgs, and is supposed to be bio-degradable, non toxic and safe for pets and plants. It doesn't say anything about staining decks though.

Won't get rid of ice but try kitty litter for traction. The flyer that came with the Trex for my deck said plain old shovel is best.

If you want to protect your Trex deck from ice you can always cover the areas that you need for access with plywood. You can scrape and shovel all you want.
