When I turned that square platter I used an outfeed roller as a tool rest. That was quite hair raising. The last time I saw a JET it was 1/2 the price of my lathe. I just picked up a nice square chunk of Claro Walnut and I'd like to turn it square too. What's good and affordable solid tool rest?

Bill,

The current issue of WoodTurning Design magazine has plans for one that is inexpensive and can be made easily from parts available at your local plumbling supply store.

Check woodturningdesign.com.

Heavy (especially in the base) and sturdy with a lot of mass is the name of the game for any free-standing tool rest. Even then, they are not the best for heavy rough, work. Were I to build one (not necessary with my Stubby), it would have a base that weighs 100 lbs or more and the vertical pipe would also be filled with concrete.
