View Full Version : Thinkin' about TS miter gauges.....

My Griz miter gauge is pretty plain. It works ok, and I've added a long face to aid stability. I was wondering what after market miter gauges are common to the WC gang.
I have looked at a bunch, and see prices all over the board (no pun here), but,as we know, price does not necessarily translate into usefull.
Any help out there folks?

Bill,
I had the same "yearn" earlier this year. My Sears miter gauge worked, but it wasn't what I wanted. I bought an Osborne EB-3 about six months ago. I find it very stable and easy to adjust and use. Plus, it's only $109 at the Osborne Mfg. site.

Good Luck,
Dick

There are a lot of good gauges available, and it's really a matter of preference. I've got an Incra V27 (http://www1.epinions.com/review/Incra_V27_Miter_Gauge/content_195368423044) with an aftermarket aluminum fence, an Osborne EB-3 (http://www1.epinions.com/review/Osborne_EB_3_Miter_Guide/content_213366771332), and a Jet/Woodhaven Deluxe.

If I were buying new, I'd be leaning toward the Incra 1000SE, which is a more advanced version of what I've got. The Incra pivots to 60 degrees which is handy. The Jet/Woodhaven is rugged and accurate, but is more difficult to adjust.

I got the Incra 27 on sale at Woodcraft years ago and bought the Incra telescoping fence direct from Incra cheaper than I could get it elsewhere. Its been working well. I would probably go with the longer fence and skip the telescoping feature. It pretty much stays extended all the time anyway and has a little bit of alignment issue (solved with foil tape as a shim). Whole rig was about $60.

Bill,
I have the Kreg version, got a good deal on it.. the kind that was too good to pass up. Nothing wrong with it, but if I had to or was looking for another I'd go with the above mentioned Incra SE1000 as I've become a big fan of the Incra stuff.

I have 2, the Osborne EB-3 and and Incra V27.

I use the EB-3 90% of the time on the TC, I use the V27 on the router and sander the most but when I want to add a backer board or something like that to the miter gauge I will use the V27 on the TC also.

The EB-3 is very good and I like the size of it, it is very wide and has good support all the way across it. The one thing about it was the stop, it was not that good until I turned it around and now it is a more solid stop.

You can look at a video here on the EB-3

Interestingly, when I had my cabinet saw, I bought an Incra 1000 to "replace" the factory miter gage. But honestly, I mostly continued to use the OEM miter setup with a sacrificial fence 98% of the time because it was smaller and I almost never used a miter gage at anything other than 90º. (45º miters were always cut with a sled)

That said, the Incra was a nice setup, albeit not the sturdiest. I wish I would have bought the BenchDog during the short time it was available...expensive, but major solid. The Osbourne, especially the current versions, is a very nice product and most owners say nice things about it.

You cant go wrong with the Incra 1000se. I really like mine.

I love my Incra 1000SE too. It is inexpensive, but extremely accurate. The first miters I cut with it were better than anything I'd ever done before--no kidding.

I bought an aftermarket miter ( woodhaven..I think) but very rarely use it. My Dubby sled is so light and handy that I always seem to reach for it.

As others have said the Incra 1000se is a great choice. It frequently can be purchased for around $120.
A magazine di d areview recently, can't recall which one. The Incra and another model came out on top (maybe the Kreg?) What I do remember is that the other model was priced at ~$250 which made the Incra 1000se at $150 a bargain.

I have the Original Incra 1000 with a 36" flip fence and I am really happy with it. Once you set it up the cuts are always right on.

I have wanted to get an 18" fence for it but I have not gotten around to it yet but I would buy mine again without hesitation.

Picked up the Incra 1000se from Amazon last spring for less than $100. One of the best buys I've made. Love it.

One improvement I would like to see on the Incra 1000SE would be a longer miter bar. Just my opinion.

Agreed on the longer miter bar. I used my OEM delta miter fence for a task and was surprised at how much further back I could start the fence. I was disappointed, but then I forgot.

Make that 2. If you go on their web site My work is in their gallery. If you can make a 24 segment ring and be dead on, you know you have a great miter sled.

I owned the Osbourne for a 1d, sent it back because it flexed too much in my opinion. Purchased the Jessem Excel, and found it to be a well designed, well built mitre gauge. No exp with the Incra.

I have been using the Incra 2000 for years and love it. I see no need to go shopping for another.

I have and like my Incra 1000 too.
The Jessem line of products have become very popular since they were introduced several years ago. They are a Canadian company and have recently opened in U.S. so you will start to see them in large numbers soon.

I like my Incra 3000. I got it on sale for less than they were selling the 1000 for. No experience with any of the others.

Rick, JessEm has been selling in the US for years...both under their own name (Rout-r-Lift, Mast-r-Lift, etc) as well as OEM with Rockler in blue. I spent time with them in their booth at AWF in Atlanta quite a few years ago--2002 actually. Right when they were introducing the Mast-r-lift and their first router table/fence setup.

It's not exactly a miter gauge, but I have a Jointech Smart Miter. Other than very straighforward 90 degree cuts where I don't need more than 1 of the same length I drop the Smart Miter on the table for just about everything. Very versatile and accurate.

One nice thing about the 1000se is the 10th degree capability. Makes segmenting a breeze.

Thanks fellas. Really good info and responses (but then again it IS WC). Surprised that there were few comments about the Osborne.
Looks like Incra is the overall winner.

I have the SE1000 Incra and love it. Stays square with the blade, and very easy to add stops and extensions.

My Jet miter gauge broke recently and I bought an Incra 1000SE based on comments from others. Ihaven't had much of a chance to use it but it seems to be well made and very accurate. My only peeve is that the instruction sheet didn't even have pictures of the 1000se. Directions for adding a sacrifical fence were totally inaccurate. One would think that if a company comes out with a different design, they'd update their instruction sheets. Paper isn't that expensive and it makes life easier for the purchaser.

My 1000SE had the instructions for the 1000 plus the supplement sheet for the "Shop Stop" You kinda had to piece together the instructions for both into one. I wouldn't exactly call it straightforward.

I bought an Incra 3000SE and like it a lot, but it's a bit of an "overkill." I would have been happy with the 1000SE. Since I bought it at a "good price" at a show it cost me about the same as the 1000SE.

I'm not reading here about the Woodhaven Deluxe miter gauge or the FastTTrack. How come? What about Jessem Excel?

I'm looking to upgrade my Powermatic 66. The Osbourne EB-3 seems too long for doing wide boards. Is the Incra 1000 out of square (FWW) and is their stop, at 1/4", too small?

Sorry if these have been covered already. Just learning my way around the site.

Im going to say all the Incras are adjustable to 90 degrees in the initial set-up(I have the 1000se and the v27 and both are adjustable), so no, the Incras are not out of square unless you purposely set them up that way. I have never had a problem with the stop and have used it extensively. If its too small, clamp a stop block onto your fence instead. I think the stop is fine. Oh and I just remembered that the stop swings away from the fence making it in effect much larger than 1/4"

If I'm not mistaken, the 1000se is the only one in the Incra line up that does 10th degree incraments. I don't even know of any other one the will either.

I own the JDS Accu Miter (from the previous used Delta saw purchase) and also have the Mast R Slide and the one that came with the sawstop. I really like the Accu miter. I would also like to try an Incra one day.
