staining maple?

I am using hard maple and a light brown stain. It looks fantastic in most areas but in some spots a grayish hugh has come through. The maple I picked was creamy white in color. I have stained maple before but it was darker than this wood. I looked on our professionally made maple cabinets and can see the same thing but in very small quantities.

Did I do something wrong or is this the nature of light colored maple? What do I do to solve the problem?
