I am in the process of turning and finishing three NIP pieces. My question is, with NIP being soft and porous what steps should I take in finishing them. With my shop being located under another business, a laquer finish is out of the question (they complain about the odor) so I will be using wipe on poly.

NIP is usually finished with oil. Danish oil is used most often in a soaking process that is quite time consuming. I use a barrel filled with danish oil to totally immerse the piece in. For examples try this web site http://jkellydunn.com/norfolk.asp. If you plan on using poly on top, I would suggest a couple of applications of your favorite oil to highlight the special features of NIP.

They all have been oil treated, they just seem to soak up any poly I apply. Is there anything I should apply before the poly.

NIP is thirsty. I have never used poly on them, but I know of others who have. On other types of porous wood I have wet sanded with oil to fill the pours before applying a build able finish.
