Been a while since I've posted anything, but I've finally got back at it. This is sasafras with a leopard wood finial. Measures 6 wide and 8 tall, antique oil finish. Comments welcome.

Really nice Mike! Love the color combination! Great classic shape on the hollow form and I do like the detail work on the finial!

Lovely piece! Doesn't that wood smell good when you're working it? I have a little 4/4 stock, but nobody carries it around here.

Nice lines! Too bad the finial fell off before the second picture. :(
Yeah nice aroma from the sassyfrass. Good to have a couple of aromatic woods in the domestic class. Sassafras, myrtle, & cedar are my favs for that in domestics. Got introduced to Makore in November and have loved padauk for a while. Cocobolo is a pleasant smell, but more sweet than spicy like makore & myrtle.
Love them flavored woods. :)

Wow ... that thing is amazing. I will second the grain orientation comment. The way it all sweeps upward and then the way the finial looks is fantastic.
So I have to ask... does the inside actually follow the entire outside curve? (i only ask because i have not done a HF yet and I am not sure if I would have the patience) How large is that opening?

Very nice Mike, I have a small amount of Sassafras and have turned one small shallow bowl I was somewhat surprised by how light it turned out to be.

Dean, the opening is 1 1/4'' and the wall thickness is about 1/4'' all the way down.
Thanks for the comments guys
