This is the peice of black ash 11"x5" I finished it in Mike Mahoney's walnut utility finish and wax. I tried something alittle different with the form. Something like Mike's forms so tell me if you like it or not.

Wow, that thing's pretty. I like the form and the finish on it and think it's a fine looking bowl.

One thing though, you might want to wash it a bit before you sell it. It's got black stuff all over it.

Bob - I gotta tell you - that is some beautiful wood! I do like the form on the bowl - it's different and that's a good thing! Seriously - nice work!

Bob,
Beautiful wood, nice finish, dislike the form. Also don't like the shape. Well, you asked. Just think the lump is not as pleasing to the eye as a smooth, gradually changing curvature. But it was worth a try. Have one of mine that shape, and don't like it either.

Still beautiful wood and nice finish.

Something about the form doesn't strike me, but the wood more than makes up for it. That is some serious wood.

Bob, I love the wood and I THINK I like the form but I'm not sure. Everyone else's eyes must be better than mine because I can't really tell what's going on there near the bottom. Could we get a shot from the bottom and off to the side?

I would like the detail if it were closer to the rim. I would suggest a hard finish for something with as much spalting as this if it is intended for food.

Thanks for all the responses guys. I am going to try this form again but I do plan on putting the detail up alittle higher on the bowl. Steve as for the finish I don't believe this spalting it is more like the wood was stained so I figured I was ok with an oil finish.

The wood is absolutely gorgeous! Personally, I don't like the step in the form...I'd rather see a banded rim or something like that up high on the bowl. That said, it's still very nice!

Congrats, Bob. Like some have said, the wood is great, not sure about the step. It's a moot point right now :D.

I love the wood and detail would love to see that wood in a crock or honey pot type shape.
