Hi guys,

I am going to restore some oak paneling in an old Victorian that has fabric-backed oak veneer applied directly to the plaster walls between the rails and stiles. Please check out the pictures of the amazing woodwork in this mansion. http://www.flickr.com/gp/14968265@N04/30w4k5
I need to replace several panels. Veneer vendors are telling me that their product needs to be applied to a substrate such as lauan.
I can't really push the veneer out the extra 3/16" that the plywood would add and still have the panel molding sit properly in the rails and stiles. One vendor says he has a paper product that I can apply with wallpaper adhesive, but it is a pre-finished product so I can't stain it to match. Also, I am looking for vendors who can faithfully replicate some of these ornate medallions and molding ornaments.
Any ideas?

Sean

For the veneer, I'd use a backed veneer. That is, a face veneer backed with a cross-grain veneer of another species. Here's one supplier: http://www.tapeease.com/nblwood.htm

Rockler sells both a paper-backed veneer, and a peel and stick paper-backed veneer. Both are stainable. The peel and stick is either 24"x24" or 24"x96", the other is 36"x96". They also carry two-ply veneer in the same sizes as the peel-and-stick.

Very nice project you have their Sean, that wood work in the mansion is beautiful, just curious, is the door trim a Plinth/shaft/and capital design through out the mansion to accent the woodwork that already exists? ~ I have a couple of ques tons for you, what is the maximum thickness of the Oak panel that can be used to replace the damaged panels. What are those medallions and the Moldings made from, there are (from the photos) 2 styles of medallions, how many do you need of each , what are the lengths and styles of the moldings you will need and what is the time frame for getting these to the job site? I may be able to help you with this if your interested, but I need a little more information.

Not sure where you're located but here is a national listing~perhaps you could get in touch with a local CNC / CarveWright owner and get some help on the madallions /rosettes.

Thanks Bruce! I definitely would like to see what my alternatives are concerning the medallions, other ornamentation......Do we have to make them from a mold? Some of them are carved but some of them seem to be made from a composite. I keep hearing sawdust and glue. They need to be stainable.
