View Full Version : Quartz in my plywood

Pictures speak louder than words. This is a piece of rose quartz (I majored in geology, not hard to identify) firmly encased in 3/4 plywood. I wish I knew where I got it. It's at least a year old cut-off laying around the shop that I ran through the saw this morning to make a jig.

Ya think my blade needs sharpening?

Was that natural grown plywood.....:D:D

I guess millions of years ago when that plywood was growing some rose quartz got in.....

Well that is a kick about the blade, but you will have to admit that its kind of funny to find something like that in your plywood.

Yes, I'd expect eventually to find a small screw or part of a machine... But, a hunk of rock?????

Please forgive me, I'm a bit of a newbie here.

Is that spalting or burl??

Dang... too bad it wasn't limestone as it would have just caused a bit of dust. Quartz is tough stuff :/

Lose any teeth or can you just resharpen?

Quartz fractures quite easily. The teeth actually look fine and cut fine too. I cut for about 1/2 hour before seeing the intruder. No chips in the teeth!! If it was a piece of basalt... It'd be a different story.

You sure it's not some crystalized ham sandwich remnant from a factory worker in China?

I was about to say ... do ya think that might be chinese quartz? :D

If that plywood came from China it would have been lead not quartz!

I thought the lead went on the outside of things made in China, not in the middle?

The lead is in the middle of the toothpaste right?

Our plywood supplier rep was by couple weeks ago with a utility knife (thin & flat) that was smashed into the lams in a sheet of 3/4" ply. Oddly enough, the knife had a big kerf in it from the panel saw. Ruined a perfectly good utility knife.

Looks just like the "pink cement glue" I found in some 3/4" Chinese fake-BB ply from HD a couple years ago. Very gritty, sometimes quite thick globs and yes, I had the Forrest resharpened after that, and used a cheap blade to cut up the remainder. Also haven't bought any HD ply since.

The interesting thing is that the "inclusions" did not show on any of the edges of the sheet. Guess their QC inspection was limited to just the edges.

I'll take voids any day. They just show up on finished and need to be filled. I found a pencil in a piece of HD 3/4 oak vernier plywood. It's sorta like lead, but not quite :o. Too bad that you do not know where it came from or you might get a free sharpening or a new blade out of it.

Take Care
