Here is the finished red oak NE. I decided to go without a pedestal on this one. LOML is going to wait for his with a pedestal....

Finished size is 7.5" x 5.5" x 3" Salad bowl finish (numerous coats!)

Good work Bonnie! You managed to keep all the bark on, kept a constant thickness and have a nice finish! Couldn't ask for much more than that! Nice work!

That is a beauty. Kept the bark, great finish and form. Well done.

Great job Bonnie!

That oak can be some hard stuff. I like the shape!

I'm sure that the LOYL is a great person, but no pedestal is a very nice (better) choice on this one.

Very nice! The only natural edge I have done doesn't have any bark on it, as it kept flying off. You have done yourself proud!

Bonnie, very nicely done! And yes, the fact that you retained all the bark is exceptionally good. Form's clean, looks great. That's really good! I've only done one NE, and threw the bark on the one I did; you did outstanding! Jude

Good job Bonnie, did you use CA on the bark as you turned it? Haven't turned one yet but I have turned a mushroom out of a piece of firewood and used CA on the natural edge and I think that it helped, just didn't know about bowls. I do want to try one.

Troy I didn't use any CA while turning it. I did use some along the bark edge while finishing so my salad bowl finish would quit soaking in so much. So, I figure it did double duty, sealed the thirsty wood and will hold the bark on forever :)

I'm impressed. The red oak I harvested in Mineola, TX has bark too thick to withstand spinning. Folks say turning red oak isn't fun but when it's free...it doesn't get much for fun....unless it's free mequite.
