I've been given 3 sheets of oak faced particle board and I'm not sure what I should build with them.

I was thinking of making bookcases (something I've done with hardwoods and cabinet grade plys (nothing that would get me in Fine Woodworking but passable). My main question is what kind of weight can this material handle?

Just to give you an idea of my skill level, at this point I'd rate myself one step above newbie. Years ago a fiend who was a pro cabinetmaker and trim carpenter who I helped when I had free time, in exchange he showed me the basics and kept me from serious injury. Thanks in advance for any advice, and I am very much aware that this is pretty low grade stuff I'm working with.

you should be able to build bookcases just fine as long as they're not too wide. google "sagulator" and put in your specifications to double-check.
