Well, it's been a while since I've posted, but I've been keeping up on all the happening and great work that people have been doing.

I've been working on a series of thin-walled bowls, turned from green to finish in one fell swoop. Obviously, since they're not twice-turned they warp as they dry. I've found that I really enjoy the interesting shapes and effects that the warping brings.

Bowl #1 - Cherry, sanded to 600, beall buffed with one coat of antique oil. It's about 5" tall and 12" at the widest diameter. The sides are ~1/16", with the bottom maybe a hair thicker.

Bowl #2 - Maple, sanded to 600, beall buffed with one coat of BLO. It's about 5.5" tall and 8" wide. It didn't warp as much as the cherry bowl did. Again, the sides are 1/16". The bottom on this one is a bit thicker, probably closer to 1/4" unfortunately. I was in a rush and forgot to measure..!

The last one I had to abandon when I got down to about 3/16" since it was starting to come apart near the pith. It's hickory, 4"x7", sanded to 600, buffed, again with an AO finish. Getting this one down to 1/16" would have been quite a challenge with all the worm-holes. There's not a lot of room for bouncing at that thickness!

Nice work. I like to turn thin walled bowls occasionally and let them warp too. Nice shapes and good form on all three pieces.

Very nice work on all three bowls Alex! You sure get them amazingly thin! I like the unique shapes on each but especially like the curl in the maple! Very nice - hopes this means you are going to start posting more!

WHile they are a challenge to turn succesfully. you will enjoy them. :)

Turning green to finish in one sitting is fun because, as you said, you never know what you'll end up with. I did a maple bowl with similar curly grain like yours but I left it much thicker (3/8" - 1/2"). It's one of my favourite pieces because even though it was super smooth when I finished it, the different grain dried at different rates. The result was a rippled (to the touch) surface, kinda like waves.

Thanks for sharing.
