Here is a wooden model of a sail boat that I finished a few weeks ago. The original idea came from something similar I saw while on vacation in Hawaii. They wanted $2300 for their version. I figured I could take a crack at it and save a few bucks. ;)

The boat is about 21" stem-to-stern and about the same tall. It is made of a plethora of woods including mahogony, bloodwood, purpleheart, maple, Brazilian cherry and walnut. The finish is several coats of Lee Valley polymerized tung oil.

Thanks for taking a peak.

So, when do we set sail to Hawaii? Nice job!!

Very nice! I like it a lot. Did you freehand the roundover on the front sail or did you use a router to do that?

Nice model Kent, simple and elegant allowing the natural beauty of the contrasting woods to dominate.

BTW, where do sail in Gainesville?

Thanks folks. This was something different than most of my woodworking projects.

Jeff, I used a 1" radius roundover bit from MLCS on the front edge of the front sail. This allowed me to leave a sharp edge on the rear side. The hull was freehanded using a band saw followed by belt sander but there was no way I thought I could put the right contour on the sail edge.

Tony, the only sailing around here is in 6' deep lakes full of gators.
