I love the Southwestern style of pottery but have a number of various shapes roughed out and waiting to be finished. This one is out of spalted birch and is 8” x 4 ½”. Sanded to 400, finish is Watco ‘Natural’ oil, buffed.

Tony - that's what I did. I have a number of hollow forms I roughed out back in July and August and then DNA soaked for a few hours. I am just starting to unwrap and finish them now. So far - so good. These were my first (green) hollow forms and wasn't sure if the same (bowl) DNA procedure would work on them or not. Like I said - so far - so good. The 10% rule gives you more than enough wood to play with once the form is dry.

Steve that color, form, and wood makes for a beauty.

Well done indeed, I just love the character of Birch. Nice job Steve , course SW forms are my favorite next to Asian.

Well executed and beautiful wood. Only suggestion I have is that it appears very symmetrical from top to bottom, that is, it's widest in about the middle of the piece. From a design standpoint, it would be even more interesting if that were moved either up or down, so either top or bottom would acheive dominance. You might try playing around with that on the next few pieces.

I really like this one Steve. The form is excellent and the grain is awesome!

Thanks everyone for the kind words!

Jon, I use the Monster hollowing System with Lazer that is made by our own Randy Privett. You can check out his tools at http://www.monster-wood-tool.com/wst_page6.php

Dan - this piece is symmetrical but it was intended that way - thanks for noticing! I have a number of hollow forms that I will be finishing in the up coming weeks and most are of the Southwestern flavor. This form was turned as a variation to that southwestern theme. All that being said - I agree with you that the form itself would be more interesting if the larger diameter was closer to the top opening.

Very nice piece, I think the last picture shows it the best. It might be that the first couple of pictures don't place it in the proper perspective. You know, kind of like when you get a close up of your mother-in-laws nose with a wide angle lens! Not Good!

You seem to be in good shape on the photo dept. The lighting is pleasing and the image is sharp. The Background seems a bit noise, could be the ISO set up or too much sharpening tool. but still the image look pretty good.
Now the bowl, that looks great.
Congrats

I agree, Steve. I also love the SW forms, but Her Majesty doesn't, so I don't do very many of them. I like the symmetry of this one. I presume the inside is sanded to 35,000 and buffed to a beautiful sheen... :D
Well done!

Steve,
Pictures are excellent, but you hadda ask. Could the background be just a bit lighter (software?), and is there a way to put some light under the piece? Just asking, not criticizing.

Steve,

Beautiful piece of wood and a beautiful form to compliment it.

Steve, that is one lovely looking piece. On the matter of photography, about the only thing I can say is that the overall contrast of the image seems a bit flat. Perhaps some post-processing with dodge/burn in Photoshop (or the GIMP)?

Don't know much about photography but I'm impressed that the beauty of the wood takes precedence over the finish. Really nice.

Thanks everyone for your kind comments!

Julie, I actually posted #7 a while ago. You can view it here: http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=69459

I managed to post these hollow forms out of sequence because I finally received my photo tent and backdrop this week and didn't have anything to take photos of that everyone here hadn't already seen. Hope everyone likes the hollow forms so far - as #8 is drying and is just a few days from being able to buff out and post.
