I am starting to depart from pens a little bit and trying to make some bowls, this is my first one I made. I had a piece of maple that had a bowl inside of it, so I decided to get it out. So here it is. 5 1/2" x 2"
Being new to this type of thing I encourage critiques for self improvement. The finish is aweful so that is one area I know I need to get wet.
Thanks for looking

I for one like it! You got everything you could out of that block. The grain is gorgeous and the form you put on it is very pleasing.

First one and you did a fancy foot??!!!

I think I'm going to take up Butterfly collecting.;)

Nice! I think that wood is better of as a bowl then a
bunch-o-pens.

Alex - very nice first bowl. Pleasing form, wonderful wood grain, good color and a nice finish! Don't see anything wrong with your finish. No tear-out, sanding marks or anything. What would you want to change in your finish if you could?

If that is your first bowl then I quit ! That is one of my most favorite shapes for bowls and you did it justice for sure. Well done all around, even the finish. Not sure what you want to improve there.

So what's next ?

Thanks you all for your nice words. When I got the wood over 1year ago it was meant to be 12 pens, I like it better a a bowl.
The finish I tried first was lacquer, I guess using a rag is not the best choice to apply it. I laid about 4 coats let it dry a few days and sand it smooth. The sand it smooth did not work much less the buffing part. So I gent back to 12o grit and went through the grits and try bufing again to get more luster and gloss, since I coul not get it right I'm living it they way it wants to be. Flat.
Again thanks for the nice comments

Well aren't we just a little pile of pity.....the finish isn't nice whaaaahaaahaa!!!!!! Yeah right!!!! Great looking bowl. I love flat finishes so to me it's about as nice as it can get. Beautiful wood, form, finish, and that foot is spectacular. Now send it right over to me.....

I wouldn't call that a departure. I'd call it an arrival. Nice job.:D

I am certainly full of awe of this bowl! :D Seriously, it's quite lovely, glad it didn't turn into pens.
