I'm hoping someone with a collection of old socket chisels could help out. I want to try to make some mortise chisels with socket type handles. I don't have any socket chisels to go by, but looking at photos of Lie Nielsen Mortise chisels, it looks like the sockets are about 5/8" at the top. Is a 5/8" socket a good size for a 1/2" mortise chisel? It seems it is about as small as you could go before risking breaking the handle off while levering chips out. What is the average taper and wall thickness used in the sockets?

My plan is to use a piece of O1 drill rod, and first turn down and bore the socket, then mill the blade. I'm going to try to make a 1/2" chisel first, then a 3/8" and finally a 1/4". Each size smaller will be a little more difficult due to more metal needing to be removed on the blade.

Thanks,
Preston
