Anybody know of a good source for heavy duty pegboard hardware?

I am building a 16' long back bench and would like to set up a pegboard system on the wall. The BORG sells this stuff but I would rather buy some of the most common size hooks in bulk, perhaps a box of 100 pcs.

Thanks,
Rob

http://www.gemplers.com/product/142307/1-Single-Rod-10-pk is one product. Be sure to search around their site for others like: http://www.gemplers.com/search/peg%20board

I have been very happy with the Talon Hooks I purchased. http://www.talonhooks.com/

Just to add-in. I also have Talons and really like them. Lee Valley sells them by quantity: http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.aspx?c=2&p=50353&cat=1,43326,43327

Besides the hooks that can/do fall out, they sell a plastic clip, that is supposed to hold them in. I tried a homemade version, zip ties. Try to find the UV resistant ones, and they are cheap enough that if I need to move something, I don't feel bad about cutting off the head.

Hello,
As I mentioned in another unrelated thread, retail stores that are closing their doors and going out of business are a good (cheap) source for shelving and fixtures (and things like pegboard hooks).

What Rich said...slot-board is a much nicer looking alternative to peg board and there are a lot of very useful fixtures that work with it. Strong stuff.

Hi Rob,
I was lucky enough to have access to slotwall sheets at wholesale prices and used it on all the walls in my shop. It was easier than hanging, mudding, sanding and painting drywall, then adding pegboard on top of that. I did some rewiring for new 220 circuits, and I just unscrewed the sheets, ran the wiring, then reattached. I get the hardware at a store display outlet here and they usually have a good assortment of used stuff. Also, there is a wide variety of hanger styles that come in handy for different uses. I use hat display hangers to hold my battery powered drivers. !/4" pegboard hangers work as well, so you may not have to buy too many new ones. The sheets are 4'x8' so if you are just doing the wall behind your bench, your initial costs wouldn't be too much and you would save lots of time in both finishing the walls and moving stuff around as you arrange your tools. Here are some pics. As you can see, many "treasures" can be sequestered and kept for the next generation to throw away:

Thanks Jim. I still consider this a "big hat no cattle" scenario as my learning curve is still pretty steep. I have had the good fortune to hook up with a custom furniture builder here that studied two years at the North Benton Street School and has been successfully designing and building amazing stuff for over 13 years. It is great being "Merlin's Assistant". John.

Rob.....Big lots carry a good variety of pegboard hooks at a reasonable price. They have the little knob that holds them in. I don't have a big lots near me but I found them at the Big Lots store when visiting my daughter in California. They have the two different sizes, for the smaller holes in 1/8 inch pegboard and for the larger holes in 1/4 or 3/16 inch pegboard. Hope this helps.

WOW, that's why I like this place. Those walls are just what I've been thinking about. That would be a super way to line the walls of my future shop. I'll have to file this one away in my "Shop Ideas" notebook for sure. Thanks John.

Wow, those slot board setups are really cool but the interior of my shop is finished and I already had some pegboard hardware on hand. The Big Lots idea did the trick. They have 10 packs for $1.50 etc. Decent looking hardware. Thanks for the tip Rod. (my local Big Lots needs to re-order:o).

Hi Jeff

Would you be so kind as to comment on the perfboard you use your talon hooks with? I can get hold of
6.4mm thick perfboard with 4mm diameter holes spaced 25mm apart.
or
3.2mm thick perfboard with 4mm diameter holes spaced 19mm apart.

Would the 6.4mm perfboard be the metric equivalent to US 1/4" pegboard? i.e. are the hole diameter and spacings the same?

Thanks!

All of the peg board I use is 1/4" hole 1" OC.

The pegboard sold at HD and Lowes around here does not have 1/4" holes and the Talon hooks do not fit. You have to ream out each hole with a 1/4" drill bit to get the hooks to attach.
I didn't measure the holes, but they are probably a metric size, like 6mm.
